Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez drops a social media hint that could potentially mean he could favor a move to Real Madrid.
Enzo Fernandez and his mixed season at Chelsea
Fernandez at Chelsea last season had a peculiar outing. It was one of those seasons in which a player performs well individually but the team falters. Similarly, Enzo Fernandez, individually was very good. The Argentinian scored 15 goals and assisted seven times in 54 appearances.
The goals might look rather modest in number, but the quality was notable. The midfielder scored goals and created goals in crucial periods for Chelsea. However, Chelsea could only manage a disappointing tenth place finish in the Premier League. Moreover, they had no domestic success to show as well.
Fernandez stats last season as per Fotmob
COMPETITIONS APPEARANCES GOALS ASSISTS
Premier League 36 10 4
UEFA Champions League 10 3 2
FA Cup 4 2 1
Despite the difficulties Chelsea faced last season, Enzo Fernandez managed to deliver. The 25-year-old was forced to shift positions frequently last season. This was because of the fact that Chelsea operated under multiple managers through the course of last season.
Different managers meant different football gameplans. And different gameplans meant Fernandez had to adapt to different positions in the midfield. Under manager Enzo Maresca, Fernandez operated in a more deeper role. Whereas under manager Liam Rosenior, he played in a more attacking position.
Real Madrid on June 14th, completed the shocking signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. This is shocking because of how “out of the blue” the whole deal was. No month long speculation, no beforehand rumors. It is a deal that almost feels like the good old days in which journalistic powers on transfers were rather less. Anyway, Real Madrid managed to secure the deal at £52 million. Now, this is a deal that will make Jose Mourinho extremely happy. On the other hand, Chelsea will not be too happy. However, the main story here has nothing to do with Cucurella. It is about Enzo Fernandez and his social media activity.
Enzo Fernandez has ‘liked’ a twitter post that announced the transfer of Cucurella. Coincidence? The fans don’t think so. Ever since fans spotted his like, the speculations have been relentless. Speculations regarding his desire to join Real Madrid just like his teammate.
Furthermore, transfer reporter Ben Jacobs strongly believes this ‘like’ is not a coincidence of any sort. He believes that Enzo Fernandez wants Real Madrid. On the other hand, Chelsea are also engaging with the La Liga side, with an asking price of £120 million. Chelsea are rather calm about the whole situation and are not panicking about the Argentinian’s future at the club.
What would life without Fernandez look like for Chelsea?
The new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso will suffer a massive blow if Enzo Fernandez leaves. The former Real Madrid boss will already be dealing with a shortage of experienced players. Chelsea will be struggling creatively in the absence of Fernandez. The midfield might become more disciplined, but the midfielder’s attacking presence will definitely be felt. Furthermore, it will be nearly impossible to find an adequate replacement for the midfielder. He is a rare breed when it comes to midfielders. This is because of his ability to play in both defensive and attacking roles.
Author’s opinion
Chelsea’s asking price of £120 million might be a bit too much for Enzo Fernandez. Perhaps, unrealistic as well. But one can never know with the way the transfer market is moving nowadays. Nobody saw the Cucurella deal truly happening. But it happened. Similarly, Enzo Fernandez could also move to Madrid in a shocking move. And if it happens, Chelsea might struggle next season as well.
