This weekend, Rock Hill is celebrating Juneteenth — a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S. Rock Hill Juneteenth is hosting a weekend full of events — including vendors, performers and a worship service.
The celebration was started 12 years ago by Mount Prospect Baptist Church. Organizers describe it as a big family reunion.
“It’s just a unifying celebration to bring the city together so that we remember the history of when slavery actually ended in our country. So, we think it’s important to share with our youth as well as our community, the history — because so many people didn’t even know," said Rock Hill Juneteenth treasurer and board member Seberina Barber Myers.
The celebration kicks off Friday at Fountain Park at 6 p.m. Dozens of food trucks will line the streets. There will be line dancing, spoken word and live music filling downtown Rock Hill.
On Saturday, June 20, Freedom Fest will be held at Clinton College from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. That event will have a genealogy group, an AARP vendor, voter registration, food trucks and more. On Sunday, June 21, Juneteenth church services will be held at Mount Prospect Baptist Church at 11:15 a.m.
