We might be in the midst of a World Cup but the Manchester United news cycle never stops. Even out in North America there are United narratives being written, whether it's Marcus Rashford's impressive cameo as he seeks a move away from Old Trafford or Amad's starring role for the Ivory Coast in his bid to return to form ahead of the new season.
The excitement for the 2026/27 campaign ramped up on Friday as the Premier League fixture list was revealed. United have been handed a favourable start away at Hull City before a home game against Ipswich Town.
United will hope to have welcomed a few new additions to their squad by the time they kick off the new season at the MKM Stadium on August 22. Michael Carrick knows he needs to bolster his squad ahead of the campaign as United look to compete on four fronts.
We run weekly question and answer sessions, so click here to submit your questions, and we'll answer them next week. Here are the answers to some of this week's questions:
When would you expect the signing of Mateus Fernandes (if it happened)? Will United be able to afford to sign another midfielder?
The key date for Fernandes, at the moment, is June 30. That is the Premier League and EFL accounting deadline for the end of a season and West Ham's don't make for pretty reading. They lost £104million last year and admitted they would have to sell players even without relegation.
There is a feeling they might need to sell players to make sure they avoid breaching financial rules and, if that's the case, they need to sell them in the next 10 days. That's why United are happy to let the Fernandes situation play out at the moment. If it does go beyond June 30, I still expect him to join the club as things stand.
As for a third midfielder, as long as they can sell Ugarte I think there is a reasonable chance that we will see another addition after Fernandes.
Do you not think Sandro Tonali would be a better replacement for Casemiro than Mateus Fernandes?
I think Fernandes and Ederson are both box-to-box players and versatile midfielders, and that is what United want to build. They see their No.6 as an elite-level passer but also a complement to Mainoo and someone who can affect the game further forward.
Tonali is an excellent player, but there are obvious reasons why clubs could be wary, given his previous betting ban, and Newcastle's sale of Anthony Gordon means they can drive a much harder bargain for Tonali than West Ham can for Fernandes.
How far have United gone with pursuing Hayden Hackney? I guess he would be a good and cheap addition given he has worked with Carrick before.
Hackney was one of a number of midfielders United have looked at as that potential third addition if Ugarte goes. Sander Berge and Shea Charles also fit the bill for that kind of role.
A deal like that is only likely to happen once Fernandes is done, and Hackney is likely to be on the move before then, with Everton seemingly leading the race for his signature.
That third addition is also going to be a squad player and rotation option. There will be plenty of games next season, but whoever comes in will need to be ready to fight for a place and probably accept they might be used more sparingly.
Why do we need another left winger when Dorgu is doing a good job?
It's all about depth. Patrick Dorgu has done a good job, but he has played three games on the left wing for United and that is a small sample size. Matheus Cunha did well there, but is probably better through the middle. Both of those players are versatile as well.
Dorgu could yet end up at left-back next season if United do sign another left-winger, rather than a left-back, while people close to him believe he is actually best as a right-winger. Whatever happens, he won't be short of games next season.
Which winger are we signing this summer? We need a fast winger who can make quick decisions.
United have looked at numerous options who can play on the left. They are big admirers of Morgan Rogers, who fits that bill, but will come with a hefty transfer fee and a lot of competition.
The MEN reported a couple of weeks ago that United also like Iliman Ndiaye at Everton, who has shown little desire to sign a new deal on Merseyside, even if he does have three years left on his current contract.
Then there is Crysencio Summerville. The Netherlands international is another player United like and one that would be attainable, given West Ham's issues mentioned above.
The difficulty would be in signing two players from the Hammers this summer, and as it stands United are still looking at their options on the left, on the wing and at left-back, and Rashford's future will also come into play here.
Why don't United go all out to sign Tchouameni?
At the moment, Real Madrid don't want to sell and Tchouameni isn't going to push to leave. Jose Mourinho has made it clear in private he doesn't want to lose the France international.
Real's situation could change if they spend big on a midfielder, but the free transfer addition of Bernardo Silva isn't going to force a departure. Maybe things change late in the window for Tchouameni, but it feels unlikely at the moment and United will want a No.6 in before that point.
Is Rashford coming back to Old Trafford or not?
He will quite probably be coming back to Carrington, but I'd be very surprised if he was reintegrated into the squad once the competitive action starts.
Rashford will get three weeks off after the World Cup and if he is still a United player by then, he will be back in first-team training and available for Michael Carrick to use in pre-season.
But the plan remains to ideally sell Rashford, with a gentleman's agreement that he can go for £40million. That price could come down later in the window and a loan deal might end up being on the table in the final weeks of the summer, but I'd be surprised if he was still at the club in September.
What are the plans for Onana? With his hefty salary, is he going to be reintegrated or sold?
It's been made clear to Andre Onana that the plan is to sell him. Senne Lammens is now clearly the No.1 and Onana, on around £190,000-a-week, is on too big a salary to be a No.2 goalkeeper, even if he wanted that role.
He is happy to fight for his place if required, but it's almost certainly a battle he can't win. The challenge for United will be drumming up a bidding war on that salary and another loan might end up being the solution.
