Alan Shearer, one of England’s most prolific strikers, played his final match for the national team on this day during the 2000 European Championships. Shearer, who made his England debut against France in February 1992, concluded his international career with 30 goals in 63 appearances. His last cap came in a crucial group stage match against Romania. England, having previously beaten Germany and lost to Portugal, needed at least a draw to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.

The match against Romania was tightly contested, with both teams vying for a place in the quarter-finals. England’s goals came from Shearer himself and Michael Owen, bringing the score to 2-2 as the match neared its conclusion. However, in the dying moments of the game, Phil Neville conceded a penalty, which Romania converted, resulting in a 3-2 victory for the Romanians. This defeat meant that Romania advanced to the next round, while England, along with Shearer, were eliminated from the tournament. This match marked the end of Shearer’s illustrious international career, as he and his teammates made their way home from the competition.
