Victor Munoz: Real Madrid do not have a buy-back clause on Liverpool signing

Despite some claims that Real Madrid have a buy-back clause on new Liverpool signing Victor Munoz, this is not actually the case.

Liverpool have completed the £34.5 million signing of the Spaniard from Osasuna, making him the first addition of the Andoni Iraola era.

Munoz arrives as an exciting winger capable of playing on both flanks, as well as centrally, making him ideal for squad depth.

The 22-year-old spent four years at Madrid before joining Osasuna in 2025 and some reports from Spain have suggested that they included a buy-back clause in his contract that would allow them to re-sign him in 2027.

Despite these claims that Madrid have a buyback clause, The Athletic‘s James Pearce has said that they are “untrue.”

He explained that Los Blancos “simply retain the right to match any offer in the event of Liverpool deciding to sell him in the future.”

The report also said that Madrid “considered triggering” their €8 million (£6.9m) buy-back option from Osasuna this summer, but decided against it.

Liverpool will pay the fee for Munoz in two instalments, having triggered his release clause.

Munoz is exactly the type of player Liverpool needed to bring in this summer, with pace out wide required after a season of struggles there.

Mohamed Salah lost a yard of pace in his final year at Anfield, while Cody Gakpo was also guilty of being both one-paced and one-dimensional.

The fact that Munoz is so versatile is a bonus, and he is hopefully the first of various summer signings for Liverpool.

Another winger is essential, with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande a leading option, and right-back, centre-back and central midfield also need to be areas of focus.

A new striker also wouldn’t go amiss, given Hugo Ekitike‘s long-term injury absence, but that arguably feels less of a priority.

It promises to be a fascinating summer at Liverpool, as Iraola looks to bring in the perfect players to suit his high-octane style of play.
