Manchester United are searching the market for a new second-choice goalkeeper, and their decision could directly impact Ayden Heaven and his status at the club.
Senne Lammens has consolidated his status as the club’s No.1 between the sticks, while Tom Heaton renewed his contract, so he will continue to serve as the third choice.
But with Altay Bayindir potentially heading out the door, a new understudy will be needed at Old Trafford.
Karl Darlow could take Heaven’s place in Man Utd’s UCL squad
In recent weeks, it has been reported that United had trimmed their options to a select few, with Karl Darlow emerging as the favourite.
The 35-year-old had a solid campaign at Leeds United, but his contract will expire at the end of the month, making him available on a transfer.
However, BBC journalist Simon Stone warns that recruiting the veteran might force United to exclude one of the players from the 25-man Champions League list, and the axe could fall on Heaven.
“I’ve seen Karl Darlow’s name being mentioned. But there’s just one issue, I read up on it today to make sure these facts align,” said Stone during his latest appearance on The United Stand.
“In the UEFA 25-man squads for European competition, you can have a maximum of 17 players who have been “nurtured” outside of your association.
“Of those eight [other] places, a maximum of four is for players trained at clubs other than yours, and four for players who have come through your system, and are over 21,” he added
“Ayden Heaven is another one who came through Arsenal’s academy, and although he’s under 21, he’s not been there for two years yet. That is the reality.”

Why Ayden Heaven could be the one sacrificed
While Stone doesn’t necessarily confirm Heaven’s omission, he suggests that the youngster would be the most likely option on the squad.
It is known that Man Utd have limited options in most departments, except in central defence, where five players vie for two roles.
Despite his injury struggles, Matthjis de Ligt remains an important player at the club, while Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire have been Michael Carrick’s main options since his arrival in January.
Therefore, the manager may have to choose between Heaven and Leny Yoro. While the Englishman has outperformed the Frenchman in recent months, the club could prefer to protect the £52 million signing.
Nevertheless, Stone offers an alternative solution, suggesting that United should instead pursue 33-year-old Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who rose through MUFC’s youth ranks, and would thus occupy one of the four slots available for academy products, thus allowing Heaven to preserve his spot.
“I’ve seen Sam Johnstone’s name mentioned, he’d be counted as a homegrown player because he came through Man United’s academy…
“If Karl Darlow came in, he’s an English player but was developed somewhere else. Would that mean you’d bring someone in, and it means Ayden Heaven, for instance, couldn’t be registered for European games because he’s not a club-trained player.”
