Fenway Sports Group has deepened its presence in American motorsport following RFK Racing’s confirmation of a multi-year contract extension for Chris Buescher.

The new agreement ensures that one of NASCAR’s most consistent performers will continue driving the No. 17 Ford Mustang Dark Horse for the organization well into the future.

RFK Racing, which stands for Roush Fenway Keselowski, made the announcement on Tuesday, and for Liverpool supporters still getting to grips with just how wide the FSG empire stretches, it is worth understanding what this deal actually represents.

Fenway Sports Group, the ownership company behind Liverpool FC, co-owns RFK Racing alongside Jack Roush and Brad Keselowski.

That makes Buescher, in a very real sense, another athlete under the FSG umbrella, sitting alongside Liverpool’s squad as part of a global portfolio that also includes the Boston Red Sox, the Pittsburgh Penguins, and various other sporting ventures.

The relationship between Buescher and this organisation stretches back nearly two decades.

He first arrived as a teenager, working in the race shop before joining the driver development programme in 2009, and what has followed is one of the more quietly impressive careers in modern NASCAR.

Now 33, Buescher has accumulated nearly 400 starts in the Cup Series and six career wins, with five of those coming under the RFK banner since his return to the team in 2020.

His breakthrough came in a remarkable 2023 campaign, when he captured three victories in a five-race stretch at Richmond, Michigan and Daytona, advancing to the Round of 12 in the playoffs and finishing seventh in the final championship standings, a career best at the time.

The following season brought another milestone, with a dramatic last-lap pass at Watkins Glen International to claim his first career road-course victory, further demonstrating the range that has made him one of the most respected drivers in the garage.

Heading into the second half of the current season, Buescher and his team sit seventh in the championship standings, with the fifth-best average finish across the entire series and ten races still remaining in the regular season.

The decision to extend was straightforward for all parties.

Speaking on the renewal, Buescher was clear about where his loyalties lie, expressing gratitude to Jack Roush, Brad Keselowski, and Fenway Sports Group specifically for their continued faith in him.

“RFK Racing has been home for most of my racing career, and that’s something I don’t take for granted,” Buescher said.

“I’ve grown up with this organization, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together over the last several years.”

“The direction we’re heading, the people we have in place, and the commitment throughout the company make me excited about the future.”

“I’m grateful to Mr. Jack, Brad, Fenway Sports Group and everyone at RFK Racing for their belief in me.”

“I’m looking forward to continuing to chase wins and championships together.”

For FSG, the extension is another signal of their long-term thinking across all their sporting properties.

They are not a group that chases short-term results.

At Liverpool, that philosophy has produced sustained success.

At RFK Racing, the same patience appears to be bearing fruit, with Buescher steadily evolving into a genuine championship contender and the kind of homegrown leader that defines stable, ambitious organisations.
