Liverpool looks to have its eyes on another of the World Cup’s youngest stars, with Australian teenager Lucas Herrington reportedly being scouted.

The Reds are already in hot pursuit of Yan Diomande, with the 19-year-old having enhanced his growing reputation with an impressive tournament debut for Ivory Coast, while Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi is also said to be on the club’s radar after his eye-catching display against Brazil.

Now, another of the tournament’s promising youngsters is being touted for a potential MLS record move to Anfield, with 18-year-old Herrington also the subject of interest of another of Europe’s biggest clubs in the shape of Barcelona.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool sent scouts to watch the center-back in action this season, while Barca has already had an opening bid rejected by his current club Colorado Rapids.

Herrington is yet to feature in this summer’s World Cup, although he is in Australia’s squad, having been named on the bench against Turkiye and the USA after emerging as one of his country’s most promising prospects.

Who is Lucas Herrington?

Born in Brisbane in 2007, Herrington came through the youth systems of local sides Taringa Rovers, Toowong FC and Brisbane City before joining Brisbane Roar’s academy in 2019.

He was rewarded with a three-year scholarship contract in September 2024 before going on to make his professional debut against Western Sydney Wanderers in December that same year.

His first goal for the club followed just a month later against Sydney FC. With his reputation growing, Herrington agreed to join Colorado Rapids in the MLS in August 2025, with the move completed in January this year after making 29 appearances in total for Brisbane Roar.

Having signed a three-year contract - with the option of an extra year - Herrington made his MLS debut in February as he started the Rapids’ opening 2-0 defeat to Seattle Sounders. He would score his first goal for the club a week later in a 2-0 win over Portland Timbers, and has so far made 17 appearances since moving to the US.

Herrington has represented Australia at U18, U19 and U20 levels, having been part of the latter side that won the 2025 AFC U20 Asian Cup. He earned his first call-up to the senior side in March this year, and has four caps to his name so far.

“He is an exceptionally talented young man with the world at his feet,” Rapids president Padraig Smith told Yahoo! Sports. “When our scouts identified him, and we began the recruitment process, we knew he had a high ceiling.”

Meanwhile, Herrington’s teammate and former Arsenal defender Rob Holding said of him: “He’s super composed. Super relaxed, on the ball, under pressure. He’s a really good player. He just keeps getting better and better each week.”

It’s suggested that the Rapids would look for an MLS-record fee for a center-back if they did choose to sell Herrington. That record is currently held by Moise Bombito, who was also sold by the Colorado club to Nice for an initial fee of $7.7M - a deal which also included add-ons and a sell-on clause.
