Man Utd given Premier League help ahead of Hull City opening day showdown

Manchester United appealed to the Premier League to have their first game of the season away from home for the first time in a decade, and their wish was granted.

United travel to newly-promoted Hull City on August 22 as Sergej Jakirovic's Tigers host Michael Carrick's Red Devils, who are preparing for Champions League football after finishing third in the league.

Extensive work is ongoing at Old Trafford, with the playing surface replaced for the first time since the club last won the top-flight title in 2012, with increased safety features also being installed.

Among a host of changes, the Old Trafford pitch will also benefit from a new drainage system fitted, but because of the amount of work ongoing, the club requested that they play their first league game away from home, and that will see them kick off at the MKM Stadium.

United will hope all their work is complete by the time they face another newly-promoted side in Ipswich Town a week later on August 29.

After facing United in front of the television cameras, Jakirovic's men then go to Coventry City, who are expecting to confirm a fresh deal for boss Frank Lampard in the next few days.

City last hosted the Red Devils in East Yorkshire back in January 2017 when they were 2-1 winners in the League Cup wth Tom Huddlestone and Oumar Niasse scoring, though it wasn't enough to see the Tigers through to the final, losing 3-2 on aggregate. Their last league outing at home against United came at the beginning of that season, with Marcus Rashford scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.
