It is remarkable how quickly opinions can change in football.
Only a year ago, Jeremie Frimpong’s arrival at Liverpool was greeted with enormous excitement.
Today, some supporters are already questioning whether he has a long-term future at Anfield.
Personally, I think that judgement is far too premature.
In fact, Andoni Iraola could be exactly the coach who brings the best out of the Dutch international.
A Difficult First Season
There is no denying that Frimpong’s first campaign at Liverpool fell short of expectations.
At times he struggled to establish himself.
Questions were raised about his defensive positioning.
His attacking output was inconsistent.
And, like several Liverpool players last season, he often looked caught between roles rather than playing to his natural strengths.
But context matters.
Liverpool endured a difficult season as a whole, and very few players consistently produced their best football.
Why Iraola Changes the Conversation
One of the defining characteristics of Andoni Iraola’s football is the importance he places on energetic, attack-minded full-backs.
His systems encourage defenders to push high, press aggressively and provide constant width.
That sounds like a perfect description of Jeremie Frimpong.
At his best, Frimpong is not a conservative full-back.
He is an explosive attacking weapon.
His pace, dribbling and willingness to get forward are among his greatest strengths.
Those qualities should be embraced, not restricted.
Playing to His Strengths
Under the previous tactical setup, Frimpong often appeared unsure of when to attack and when to hold his position.
That hesitation can be costly for a player whose game is built on instinct and aggression.
Iraola’s approach may remove that uncertainty.
Rather than asking Frimpong to play within himself, Liverpool’s new head coach could encourage him to attack with freedom while relying on a structured pressing system to protect the team defensively.
That could transform his confidence.
He Has Already Shown His Quality
Supporters should also remember why Liverpool signed him in the first place.
Frimpong was one of the most exciting attacking full-backs in Europe before arriving at Anfield.
His performances in Germany demonstrated that he possesses the ability to change matches through his pace, direct running and creativity.
One difficult season should not erase that.
Players often need time to adapt, particularly when joining clubs with Liverpool’s expectations.
Competition Can Be Healthy
Conor Bradley’s emergence means Frimpong cannot expect to walk straight into the starting eleven.
But healthy competition is exactly what top clubs need.
If Iraola can improve both players, Liverpool will have two outstanding options at right-back rather than one.
That is a position of strength, not weakness.
A Fresh Start
New managers often breathe new life into players who appeared to be drifting.
Different ideas.
Different instructions.
Different relationships.
Sometimes that is all it takes.
Frimpong now has the opportunity to start again under a coach whose football appears perfectly suited to his attributes.
That should excite Liverpool supporters rather than concern them.
Too Soon to Judge
Writing off Jeremie Frimpong after one difficult season feels premature.
Liverpool invested in him because they believed he had the qualities to succeed at the highest level.
Those qualities have not disappeared.
They simply need the right environment to flourish.
And if Andoni Iraola can unlock the version of Frimpong that thrilled supporters in Germany, Liverpool may discover they already possess the dynamic right-back many fans are searching for in the transfer market.
Sometimes the answer is not a new signing.
Sometimes it is getting the best out of the players you already have.
