Frenchman tells Alonso to make£40M Blues signing:‘good fit’for Chelsea’

Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has backed Xabi Alonso to pursue a move for Marcus Rashford this summer, with speculation continuing over the forward’s long-term future and potential changes at Chelsea.

Speaking in recent comments reported by British media, Gallas suggested that Rashford could be a strong fit for a CHELSEA side expected to undergo further attacking restructuring during the summer transfer window.

He also indicated that Alonso’s presence in a leadership or coaching role could be a decisive factor in convincing elite players to consider a move to Stamford Bridge.

Rashford, currently under contract at Manchester United, has been the subject of ongoing transfer speculation following an inconsistent period in form and increasing scrutiny over his role within the squad.

Despite that, the 28-year-old remains one of England’s most recognisable forwards and is valued for his pace, direct running and ability to play across the front line.

Gallas believes a fresh environment under a new tactical project could help the player rediscover his peak performance levels. He also pointed to Alonso’s growing reputation as a modern, progressive coach as a potential draw for high-profile attackers seeking a reset in their careers

‘I think Marcus Rashford did well at Barcelona,’ Gallas told talkSPORT Bet. They had a good system. I’m surprised he didn’t sign for them permanently, I don’t know what happened.

‘I would say CHELSEA would be a better fit given how they play. I’m sure he wanted to stay in Barcelona, but it didn’t happen. If he has to come back to the Premier League, or maybe go somewhere else like Italy, we will see. But I could picture him at Chelsea.’

Would Rashford be worth buying?

From a tactical perspective, Rashford offers elite-level pace, direct running, and genuine goal threat when used in transition-heavy systems. Alonso’s coaching style, which has typically emphasised structured possession with sharp vertical progression, could actually suit Rashford better than some previous possession-heavy Chelsea setups, because it creates space for decisive forward movements rather than slow, congested build-up play.

However, there are legitimate concerns. Rashford’s consistency remains the central question. His output tends to fluctuate across seasons, and Alonso is a manager who generally demands high tactical discipline and reliability without the ball.

In that sense, Rashford would need to show significant improvement in pressing intensity and positional awareness to become an undisputed starter rather than a rotational attacking option.

There is also the issue of squad balance. CHELSEA already possess several wide forwards and attacking profiles, and adding Rashford could either elevate competition or create redundancy depending on how Alonso structures his frontline.
