Transfer dominoes could see £250k/week LFC star join Newcastle United for £60m

After Newcastle United’s move to sign Victor Munoz was hijacked by Liverpool, the Magpies could now look to sign Cody Gakpo winger to replace Anthony Gordon.

In what is becoming one of the more unexpected transfer dominoes of the 2026 summer transfer, Gakpo could leave Anfield this summer.

Not for the first time, the Dutch international is being linked with an Anfield exit following a frustrating season. His nine goals and six assists, while not awful, do not justify the reported salary he earns. Gakpo’s predictable cut-in-and-shoot pattern of play became all too easy for Premier League defenders to predict and prevent in 2025-26.

The addition of Munoz adds more variety at left wing and calls into question how much game time will be available to Gakpo next season.

A report from Caught Offside now reports that Newcastle are interested in replacing Gordon, who just joined Barcelona, with Gakpo, which would be welcomed by a large sect of Liverpool fans.

The report from Mark Brus reads: “Although our sources have confirmed the Magpies entered into advanced talks over signing Munoz, there was also some hesitation about meeting the 22-year-old’s release clause, while Liverpool were happy to pay it and moved quickly to do so.

Newcastle have had other options in mind for some time, with Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Cody Gakpo all understood to have been discussed.”

A Caught Offside report from a week ago stated that Liverpool could sell Gakpo for around €70m (£61m) amid interest from Spurs.

Liverpool can save £13m per year by selling Cody Gakpo

I accidentally rage-baited half of Liverpool Twitter today by tweeting a list of the club’s top 10 highest-paid players, with many fans reacting with outrage at how much Gakpo earns.

The Dutchman reportedly earns around £250,000 per week, according to Capology, which equates to £13 million per year. Gakpo’s form this season was enough for many supporters to call for his sale, but his earnings make the situation even more questionable.

Gakpo is a good player. Denying that is a waste of time, but he is too predictable and doesn’t score enough to warrant being the fourth-highest paid player at the club. The list I shared ranks the highest paid players at Anfield, excluding Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson, who are all leaving this summer.

If Newcastle United can make Liverpool a good enough offer, not only would it help fund a move for someone like PSG’s Bradley Barcola, but it would also go a long way in helping FSG debloat the wage bill.
