Liverpool is one of England’s most iconic football clubs, competing in the Premier League and European competitions like the UEFA Champions League. Known for its attacking style, legendary players, and passionate fanbase, Liverpool has a rich history of domestic league… Read More about LIVERPOOL

Liverpool forward Federico Chiesa is ready to fight for his place in the squad after the departure of former boss Arne Slot

Federico Chiesa and his difficult Liverpool career

Chiesa is someone who arrived at Anfield amidst massive expectations. However the truth is, he has failed to fulfill those expectations. The Italian moved to Liverpool in the 2024/25 season after promising stints at Fiorentina and Juventus. He made a name for himself especially in Fiorentina as a potent winger and attacking player.

He then moved to Juventus on loan before making the move permanent. After a decent Juventus stint, Chiesa then made the big move to Liverpool. The Liverpool faithful expected him to be a solid squad player, who chips in with crucial contributions. However under Arne Slot, Chiesa barely created any kind of impression.

Chiesa’s Liverpool stats, as per FOTMOB:

Appearances Goals Assists

50 5 4

Arne Slot’s reluctance to give him opportunities, and Chiesa barely using his opportunities resulted in a disaster. So far, it would definitely be fair to call Chiesa’s Liverpool spell as an utter failure. Normally, it is rather ignorant to judge players simply based on stats. But Chiesa’s stats are too poor to not judge. He has had 50 games to prove his mettle and caliber. Despite the minimal number of opportunities provided, the 28-year-old has created zero impact. Something that is simply not good enough for a massive club like Liverpool.

Arne Slot’s reluctance to field Chiesa

Slot and his association with Liverpool was definitely a mixed bag. On one hand, the 2024/25 season will be a special memory. It was the Dutch boss’ first season at Anfield and he won the Premier League straightaway. Expectations were over the roof for the next season amongst the fans.

A title defense was expected along with continental success. Moreover, fans expected Arne Slot to have a similar managerial stint to legendary Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who he replaced. Some expected him to have an even more successful stint.

However, the season that followed was a complete disaster. The Reds could barely string together wins and finished fifth in the Premier League. An embarrassment for the defending champions. Arne Slot slowly but surely started appearing clueless and was eventually sacked last month. One of the most criticized aspects of the Dutchman’s tenure was his treatment of Chiesa.

However, there is another side to the story as well. Interestingly when Arne Slot arrived as the Liverpool boss, Chiesa was his only signing in the summer. So Slot did not necessarily dislike him as a player. He needed Chiesa at Liverpool. However, the Italian missed preseason and was also hit with a two month long injury early into his Liverpool career. This consequently made it extremely difficult for Slot to streamline the winger into the squad and his football plans.

Chiesa ‘determined’ to stay and fight at Liverpool

During a recent post-match interview, Chiesa displayed determination and refused to speak about leaving Liverpool. “I’ll go on a training camp in the US, then I’ll talk to the club and the new manager, Iraola, and we’ll see,” Chiesa said. This shows that the Italian is keen on working with new manager Andoni Iraola. On so many occasions over the years, we have seen struggling players make comebacks after the arrival of a new manager. That could very well happen for Chiesa under Iraola.

Author’s opinion

Let’s be real. Federico Chiesa is 28 now. His contract at Liverpool runs until 2028 but it looks extremely unlikely for him to mount a comeback in his Liverpool career. Especially with the more attractive options on the table for the Reds. Like 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha who has looked extremely impressive so far. However, Iraola could make full use of Chiesa and could potentially reinvent his football. You never know.
