Atletico Madrid emerges as threat to Liverpool’s Yan Diomande pursuit

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande is intensifying by the day, but the path to securing the 19-year-old RB Leipzig winger is becoming increasingly crowded, with a chain of transfer activity now threatening to bring one of Europe’s most aggressive clubs directly into the race.

The Reds have made their intentions clear.

Liverpool have communicated to RB Leipzig that they are willing to do a deal at around 100 million euros, and reports in Germany have suggested that a first bid has already been made and rejected.

That opening salvo being turned away is not unusual at this stage of negotiations, but what has changed in the last 48 hours is the nature of the competition Liverpool may soon be facing.

The threat does not come directly from Atletico Madrid.

It arrives through a domino effect that begins in Paris and ends on the banks of the Manzanares.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid has begun talks with PSG forward Kang-in Lee, with personal terms getting closer as the Spanish side prepares to follow up with the European champions over a formal agreement.

That development matters enormously for Liverpool because of what it unlocks at PSG.

Previous reports had established that the Ligue 1 champions needed to offload at least one or two attacking options before making a serious move for Diomande.

Should Lee complete his move to the Wanda Metropolitano, that exit provides PSG with both the financial headroom and the squad space to enter the Diomande conversation at full force.

The Athletic has reported that PSG will not make a move for Diomande unless they receive a clear indication that the player wants to move to Paris.

That caveat is significant.

It suggests PSG’s pursuit is conditional rather than unconditional, and Diomande’s own public comments have done little to rule out an English destination.

Speaking after Ivory Coast’s impressive 1-0 victory over Ecuador at the World Cup, in which he was named player of the match, Diomande was asked directly about the Premier League.

His response was telling, “I don’t know.”

“I’m an RB Leipzig player, but why not?”

“My agents will sort that out.”

His Ivory Coast manager Emerse Fae has been more amused than troubled by the noise surrounding his star player.

Speaking to reporters, Fae recalled how the speculation had shifted depending on which country the squad was in, with journalists in France telling him Diomande was about to sign for PSG, and journalists in the United States now pointing toward Liverpool.

For Liverpool, the Diomande chase is their most ambitious move of the summer and the one that would define the Andoni Iraola era most powerfully in its early stages.

Leipzig are under no pressure to sell and have previously indicated interest in offering him a new contract.

But the player’s hints and the growing queue of elite clubs circling suggest this story is far from over
