Erik ten Hag’s stint at Manchester United was unsuccessful overall, and the Dutchman has had a disappointing time of things since departing England in October 2024.

The 56-year-old became one of Bayer Leverkusen’s worst all-time managers, being sacked after just 2 months in charge of the Bundesliga side, and has not gone back into a head coach role since.

Erik ten Hag’s next venture will be as technical director at Dutch club FC Twente, a club that he has supported and even worked for in his lifetime.

In his time at Manchester United, Erik ten Hag made a bold call to freeze out Cristiano Ronaldo. His solution was to sign Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley. Now, despite not being a manager, the Dutchman is looking to bring in his fellow countryman once again.

In an interview with broadcaster NOS, ten Hag admitted, “At Twente, we are naturally interested in Wout Weghorst. He’s a lad with true Twente roots. We are super proud of everything Wout has achieved.

“I’ve known Wout and the Weghorst family for a very, very long time. Of course, I’d like to have him on the team. Who wouldn’t want a striker like Wout Weghorst? He’s focused on the World Cup now. He wants to be a world champion. Do we have to wait? For Wout, yes…”

Despite a poor period together at Manchester United, where Weghorst scored just twice in 31 appearances, and none at all in the Premier League, it appears no love has been lost between the two. The now 33-year-old centre-forward, who stands at a giant 6 feet 6 inches tall, really is a journeyman, never really settling down at one club.

However, the signing does not appear imminent, after ten Hag’s admission that Twente will have to wait. Weghorst currently plays for fellow Dutch club Ajax, and scored nine goals in 34 appearances in the 2025/26 season.

It would be an interesting move for Twente, and one that may intrigue Manchester United fans, seeing their former striker and Erik ten Hag working together once again.
