Manchester United are in a predicament, with the midfield market extremely bloated this summer.
They are set to miss out on the signing of Elliot Anderson, who would be the club’s preferred signing, due to Nottingham Forest’s high demands, and a deal for Mateus Fernandes is proving tough to navigate.
One thing on Manchester United’s side is time, with the transfer window only just swinging open on June 15. But a factor that isn’t is pressure from other clubs, and Tottenham Hotspur have now entered talks with another reported United target, after closing in on an agreement for Fernandes.
According to David Ornstein for The Athletic, Spurs have entered talks with Newcastle United to sign Sandro Tonali. The Magpies will demand a fee of around £100m to part ways with the Italian midfield maestro, who is also wanted by Manchester City.
Just four days ago, Tottenham had not yet approached Newcastle over the signing, but a deal is edging closer, with club-to-club contact now underway.
It shows a great deal of intent from Spurs and Roberto De Zerbi, and will leave Manchester United fans feeling out of the loop. With Spurs, a club without European football next season, edging closer to signing two of INEOS’s targets, it all feels radio silent on the Red Devils’ front.
Manchester United are looking to sign three midfielders this summer, with one of these all-but completed – Atalanta and Brazil midfielder Ederson’s signing is imminent.
Their next steps for now are unclear, with the club seemingly priced out of deals for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes in talks with Spurs.
There is no doubt United will be working hard on a daily basis to find their next midfield signing. With over two months until the transfer window shuts, they can afford to be calculated, but must not hesitate in their convictions when certain in their top target.
