After opening club-to-club talks, Tottenham Hotspur have begun to put their cards on the table.

Sandro Tonali is a player in demand this summer, with Manchester United and Manchester City both interested in the Italian’s services.

But the first club to really push for the transfer is, perhaps more surprisingly, Roberto De Zerbi’s Tottenham Hotspur, who have entered direct talks with Newcastle United.

According to Sky Sports, Spurs have now tabled an offer for Tonali worth around £80 million. Newcastle are after more, and immediately pushed back the offer.

Spurs’ Italian boss Roberto De Zerbi has made the signing of Tonali his priority, in his bid to build a squad with the capability of playing high-tempo football. A player who can dictate the tempo of games in midfield is important, and Tonali appears to be their man.

The Athletic earlier reported that Newcastle are after a fee of around £100 million if they are to part ways with Tonali, so the clubs remain far apart in their respective valuations.

Manchester United’s interest is not mentioned in any recent reports over Sandro Tonali, despite interest ahead of the window. It appears their involvement in any deal is either not public as of now, or has cooled.

With the club adopting a steady approach to spending, Newcastle’s high valuation of Tonali is unlikely to be something United will wish to pay out this summer. The potential signing of Mateus Fernandes, a player who Spurs are also in talks with, could be around £20m less after West Ham’s relegation to the Championship.

A deal for a midfielder is proving a tough nut to crack for Manchester United, but it’s only early days in the summer transfer window. If a signing is not completed by mid-August, then it will be time to panic, but for now, the club must stay smart and stick to their transfer budgets.
