Yan Diomande justifies Liverpool transfer stance as World Cup star 'impossible to stop'

Liverpool wants to sign 19-year-old Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig this summer, with the Ivory Coast winger impressing at the World Cup and valued at well over $100M

Yan Diomande appears to be a star in the making and after he made a big impression on his World Cup debut, he carried on where he left off against Germany.

Andros Townsend, on ITV Sport's coverage of the game, described the Liverpool target as "impossible to stop" as he created the opening goal. He stopped and stood Joshua Kimmich up — starting on the left wing in this match, rather than the right, as he did last time out — beating the experienced Bayern Munich man all ends up before firing in a dangerous low cross.

The ball fell to Franck Kessie, who finished well and put Ivory Coast ahead, but the goal was mainly Diomande's doing, as he made beating his man — someone as good as Kimmich — look easy.

It is understood that Liverpool has made clear to RB Leipzig that it would be willing to pay €100 million ($115 million/£85 million) for Diomande's services, even though he is only 19.

There was more evidence here, though, as he took on Florian Wirtz's team, of why Leipzig is so keen to keep the teenage sensation. Ideally, it would tie him down to a new deal.

Amid interest from Liverpool and PSG, however, it remains to be seen if that is possible. If he carries on playing like this, the price tag is only likely to head in one direction.

Liverpool needs more of exactly what Diomande offers: pace, trickery, and the ability to beat a man at will. While it has already signed Victor Munoz, it requires even more additions in wide areas.

"It's a dream," Diomande said in a press conference before taking on Germany. "Representing your country is something huge.

"Participating in the AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) was already an important achievement for me, but being selected for a World Cup is another level.

"This has been an amazing year for me. I'm grateful for everything that's happening to me and I'm just going to continue to give my best on the pitch.

"When you play in Germany, you quickly see that everything there is very structured. Discipline is very important, punctuality, and intensity in training.

"I learned a lot as a result, both on and off the pitch. Germany is a very strong team; they never give up and fight until the end. Add to that their individual quality.

"That makes them very strong. Florian Wirtz, for example, is a very creative player who finds solutions in the final third, even in tight spaces. Players like that can change a game with a single action."
