Mark Hughes’ son, Alex, has passed away at the age of 38 in a death that has been described as sudden and unexpected.
A statement, released via the League Managers Association, from Mark Hughes reads: “Jill and I are totally heartbroken by the sudden and unexpected loss of our beloved son Alex.
“Alex was a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo.
“Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC, and had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all.
“We ask for privacy during this sad time as we come to terms with our family’s loss. The Hughes family”
Alex Hughes had a brief playing career before taking up several roles away from the field as he underwent his career.
He was, as the statement confirms, the Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC although was also an analyst, working alongside his father at several clubs including Manchester City and Fulham.
Alex Hughes was also a licensed agent, spending three years in Portugal as academy manager at VSI Rio Maior and more recently worked as the director of football at AFC Fylde before joining League Two side Grimsby last year.
His dad, Mark, is a Manchester United legend and won two Premier League titles, three FA Cups, and the European Super Cup alongside other trophies, too.
He recently departed his most recent role as manager at Carlisle United after the side failed to win promotion from the National League and has had managerial spells at clubs such as Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, and Bradford City previously.
Everyone at CentreDevils would like to pass their best wishes to the Hughes family at this difficult time.
