Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has reportedly advised the club to keep alternative options ready in the transfer market, highlighting Felix Nmecha as a viable contingency plan should negotiations for Mateus Fernandes prove difficult or financially unworkable.
United are understood to be actively pursuing reinforcements in central midfield as part of their ongoing squad rebuild under their current project. The club’s recruitment team has prioritised athleticism, ball progression and tactical flexibility, with both Fernandes and Nmecha viewed as profiles capable of improving depth and competitiveness in the middle of the pitch.
Fernandes, who has attracted interest following a strong campaign with West Ham, is believed to be Manchester United’s preferred target in the position. However, any deal is expected to be complex due to West Ham’s valuation and reluctance to sell one of their key young assets.
Nmecha, currently at Borussia Dortmund, has emerged as a strong alternative option due to his Bundesliga experience and ability to operate in multiple midfield roles.
His technical ability, pressing intensity and physical presence are seen as qualities that could translate effectively to the Premier League: ‘The more he plays like he did the other night the more expensive he’ll get,’ Neville told ITV
‘But at the moment, we hear Manchester United are being quoted £100 million for the West Ham boy Fernandes, so they’re going to have to be looking around this tournament and parts of Europe.
‘He looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything.’
At present, United are expected to accelerate their midfield planning in the coming weeks as they look to finalise key additions before the start of the new season.
Dortmund, meanwhile, are not actively looking to sell Nmecha, though reports suggest they could consider significant offers under the right circumstances. Any potential move would depend on Manchester United’s willingness to meet a substantial valuation and the player’s openness to a Premier League switch.
As the transfer window progresses, United’s midfield strategy is expected to remain fluid, with Fernandes still the priority target but Nmecha increasingly viewed as a credible alternative should negotiations fail to progress.
