Sandro Tonali has been one of the main names linked to Manchester United so far this summer.
The Newcastle United midfielder, who has impressed for Eddie Howe’s side in his time at the club, attracted interest from the Red Devils in February.
Attention from Arsenal followed as clubs began to circle around the Italian international ahead of this summer’s transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur are the most recent club to emerge as a leading contender for Tonali and entered direct talks for the midfielder recently.
The London-based outfit also submitted a bid for the midfielder recently, an offer that was immediately rejected by Newcastle.
Now, as bids begin to circulate, The Mirror reports that Manchester United have informed Newcastle United that the club will not pursuing the midfielder this summer.
The outlet also states that the Red Devils believe that the combined cost of the transfer fee and the player’s wage demands are too much, forcing them out of a possible move.
Manchester United have already agreed a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson previously with the Brazilian expected to complete a permanent move to Old Trafford in the coming weeks.
The club have also expressed an interest in Elliot Anderson although Manchester City currently appear more likely to sign the Nottingham Forest midfielder than United.
With a move for Sandro Tonali ruled out, the Red Devils could choose to look towards alternative midfield targets to add to the squad’s depth in the middle of the park.
Whether the club will push for Anderson further or go for another midfielder remains to be seen and Manchester United’s next steps are not yet clear after this decision.
The transfer window is now open, and will close at the beginning of September after the season begins, providing the club with an opportunity to recruit.
