Forget Shea Charles, Wilcox can sign a World Cup star for midfield he knows well already

Manchester United’s midfield search hasn’t moved much, but bargain options like Shea Charles are an interesting case.

Since signing Ederson, Man Utd are stuck in a transfer saga for Mateus Fernandes, showing the need to be smart in the market.

That’s where Shea Charles’ name arose, as the Southampton man is a budget option with a high upside, homegrown status in England, and well-known to Jason Wilcox.

The unknown is the jump he’ll take to Old Trafford, a worry that is less of a concern for a player who ticks all these boxes, but is also proving himself at the highest level.

Felix Nmecha is shining for Germany at the World Cup

Man Utd have restricted themselves to Premier League-proven players to follow Ederson through the door, but the next best thing is enticing as well.

Felix Nmecha is starring for Germany at the World Cup, and his footballing education happened in England with Manchester City.

He recently put in a complete midfielder’s performance in Germany’s 2-1 win against Amad’s Ivory Coast, hammering home his top-level credentials.

Nmecha has been a rock-steady presence for Dortmund since signing from Wolfsburg, but is truly having his breakout this season.

Dortmund are usually happy to be a stepping stone club for talent, and they might even be tempted to cash in on Nmecha if he continues his current World Cup form.

For Man Utd, he is the perfect signing as the “higher profile Shea Charles”.

Nmecha ticks all the boxes for Man Utd

Nmecha is the perfect signing for United because all the factors align to make him a huge green flag.

Man Utd’s Premier League fixtures for 2026/27 have now been CONFIRMED – What do you think?

He is a natural defensive midfielder, excelling in the form of a destroyer and a playmaker, so he will help Kobbie Mainoo and Ederson equally.

At 25, he has his best years ahead of him. He came through the Man City academy, so he will count towards the homegrown quota for the UCL next season.

Like Charles, Wilcox knows him well as he was at the club when Nmecha was coming through, so United have an ace in the hole for negotiation of personal terms as well.

If Dortmund are open to selling for a reasonable amount, United can do a lot worse than Nmecha, especially now that he’s showing his pedigree at the biggest tournament in international football.
