Liverpool could always rely on Alan Kennedy – especially when a trophy was on the line.
One of the best left-backs the club has ever had, ‘Barney Rubble’ played a direct role in securing two European Cups for the Reds.
He arrived from Newcastle United in 1978 to help solve what had been a problem position for Bob Paisley.
Three hundred and fifty-nine appearances, 20 goals and 12 major honours later, it is fair to say the investment in the most expensive British full-back was a wise one.
Arguably ahead of his time, Kennedy was an attack-minded defender who was always willing to fly down the left flank. And he tended to save his best for the grandest of stages.
Having scored in the 1981 League Cup final two months earlier, Kennedy popped up with the late winner in the European Cup showpiece against Real Madrid in Paris, firing a finish inside the near post.
“I was fortunate to enjoy plenty of wonderful moments playing for Liverpool and scoring the winner in 1981 is certainly up there,” he said.
