Liverpool“irritated” by Inter Milan’s offer

The summer transfer saga surrounding Curtis Jones is showing no signs of resolution, with Liverpool increasingly irritated by Inter Milan’s approach to negotiations for the 25-year-old midfielder.

The Nerazzurri have now submitted a second offer worth €25 million (£21.6 million), this time accompanied by a sell-on clause, after their opening proposal of €20 million (£17.3 million) was immediately dismissed at Anfield.

Yet the revised figure has done little to shift Liverpool’s mood.

With the midfield market trending significantly higher this summer, those inside the club do not believe Inter are treating the negotiation with the seriousness it deserves.

Liverpool’s asking price stands at £35 million, a valuation partly informed by Conor Gallagher’s move from Atletico Madrid to Tottenham in January for a comparable fee.

Against that backdrop, according to James Pearce, Inter’s latest proposal still falls well short of what the Reds consider reasonable for a player with eight years of top-level experience at the club.

The wider context makes Liverpool’s frustration understandable.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Jones himself is keen on the move, with the player having asked teammate Federico Chiesa about life in Italy.

Chiesa publicly endorsed the prospect, telling La Gazzetta dello Sport that Jones is technically excellent and that Inter are right to pursue him.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has also made no attempt to conceal his club’s interest, openly stating that they are paying close attention to the situation.

Jones made 49 appearances across all competitions last season, contributing three goals and three assists, but a regular starting berth remained elusive for much of the campaign.

Inter would offer him something Anfield has not consistently provided: a central midfield role and a clear sense of importance within the squad.

The financial trigger for Inter’s move is expected to be the departure of Davide Frattesi, with Nottingham Forest understood to be preparing a bid for the Italy international.

The proceeds from that sale would give Inter the headroom to move more decisively.

The Athletic’s James Pearce has reported that Liverpool do not want to lose Jones, the only Scouser in their first-team squad, but would reluctantly sanction a sale if the player pushes for the exit and a suitable offer arrives.

On current evidence, Inter have yet to provide either the fee or the conviction to make that happen.

Liverpool irritated by Inter Milan’s latest lowball offer for Curtis Jones (€25m/£21.6m) and don’t think they are being serious given midfield market this summer. https://t.co/WKSZQvm0cJ
