For months, many assumed Christian Mahogany would enter training camp as the favorite to start at left guard for the Detroit Lions.
Dan Campbell isn’t ready to hand him the job.
Speaking during veteran minicamp, the Lions head coach made it clear that one of Detroit’s most important position battles remains wide open heading into the 2026 season.
“Listen, it is open,” when asked about Mahogany’s outlook at left guard.
The comment serves as a reminder that competition remains a cornerstone of Detroit’s culture, even along one of the NFL’s most respected offensive lines.

Christian Mahogany Still Has Work To Do
Mahogany has flashed promise during his first two seasons in Detroit. After appearing in games during the 2024 season, he earned opportunities to start before injuries interrupted his development.
The Lions still believe in his talent.
“We know he has got ability, he’s got potential,” Campbell explained.
However, belief alone won’t guarantee a starting role.
Campbell pointed to several players who will challenge Mahogany for snaps this summer, including veteran Ben Bartch and 2025 draft pick Miles Frazier.
“There is a reason why we brought in Ben Bartch, there is a reason why Miles Frazier is here,” Campbell said.
He even hinted that offensive lineman Giovanni Manu could get a look inside as the competition unfolds.
Competition Is Exactly What Campbell Wants
The Lions have repeatedly emphasized competition throughout the offseason, and Campbell believes it brings out the best in players.
“We are going to let this thing go and see what happens,” Campbell said. “It will be good for all of them.”
According to Campbell, having players constantly pushing one another creates a healthier environment and ultimately strengthens the roster.
“When you have some nipping at your heels or constantly, you are having to compete with and push and you guys are all competing for the same thing, it is good for everybody.”
A Crucial Battle for Detroit’s Offense
The outcome of the left guard competition could have a significant impact on Detroit’s offense.
With Jahmyr Gibbs expected to take on a larger workload and Jared Goff leading an offense with championship aspirations, maintaining elite offensive line play will be critical.
Mahogany may still have the inside track, thanks to his experience in the system and previous starts. But Campbell’s comments suggest no one should consider the position settled.
As training camp approaches, one thing is clear.
The Lions plan to make Christian Mahogany earn it.
