In his latest venture away from Manchester United, Erik ten Hag has made his first coaching appointments.

The Dutchman had a poor time overall in England, despite winning an FA Cup and Carabao Cup in his time at Old Trafford. In his only managerial stint since then, ten Hag managed Bayer Leverkusen but was sacked after just two months.

Now ten Hag has made the step into a technical director role. At Dutch Eredivisie side Twente, the former Manchester United boss is in an extremely senior position.

His first coaching appointment has been made, to assist Twente head coach John van den Brom. Former Go Ahead Eagles and VfL Wolfsburg coach Tristan Berghuis, who is just 30 years old, has officially signed a two-year deal at the club.

On completion of the deal, Erik ten Hag told FC Twente’s official website, “We are opting for a staff adjustment in a few positions. After previously appointing Eric Weghorst as goalkeeper coach, Tristan becomes one of John van den Brom’s assistants. Tristan is a welcome addition; his vision on football and his working methods fit well with where we want to go with FC Twente.”

As well as the appointment of the highly-rated Berghuis, ten Hag has brought in coach Luc Stolker, who will focus on individual training and guidance for players.

It’s an interesting shake-up, as ten Hag delivers his first appointments in his tenure at the club. He’ll be hoping to deliver more success than he did in a managerial role at Manchester United, where two trophies couldn’t overshadow the deeper issues.

Since sacking Erik ten Hag in 2024, United made another failed appointment in Ruben Amorim, who delivered no trophies. Following the end of that era in January 2026, Michael Carrick’s appointment has sparked excitement and hope for the future.

United are back in the UEFA Champions League in 2026/27, and will not be looking back at the sacking of Erik ten Hag with many regrets.
