Former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood’s next steps could lie away from Marseille, after off-field controversy between the player and higher-ups.
Following the departure of Roberto De Zerbi in February 2026, the French club have had a tough time of things, and Greenwood himself has received plenty of criticism.
Despite this, Mason Greenwood remains under contract until 2029 at Marseille. He has reportedly been valued at around €80 million, though uncertain times between the two parties could mean the French club settle for less.
Greenwood’s next steps for now are unclear, but according to Football London, Tottenham Hotspur have no interest in signing Mason Greenwood after reports that they were in the hunt for the former Manchester United youngster’s signature. But the reports come as no surprise – they are an easy link to make after past comments from Spurs’ new manager.
Lilywhites’ boss De Zerbi stoked controversy as Marseille manager in late 2025 after his comments about Mason Greenwood, saying that his player was a “good guy” who had paid a “heavy price” for domestic abuse allegations he had faced in the past.
Upon joining Spurs, De Zerbi was quizzed on these comments: “I was a bit sad and sorry it happened because I’m sorry if somebody took offence. I must repeat what I said. This topic is very close to me. I’m very sensitive about this topic because of the person I am and because I have a daughter.”
“And so I must repeat what I said the other time. I have always been against – always – any type of violence, especially against women. But not only violence – even just sexist jokes or other sexist behaviours.”
After multiple Tottenham Hotspur groups spoke out against the potential appointment of Roberto De Zerbi following his comments, the signing of Mason Greenwood is even less likely to go down well, and Spurs will want to avoid controversy.
The former United player could be on the move again this summer, after a 26-goal season for Marseille, but Spurs won’t be his destination.
