T Colton McKivitz Wants To Remain With 49ers Beyond 2028

Plenty of time remains on **Colton McKivitz**‘s current contract. If he has his way, though, the 49ers’ starting right tackle will remain in place beyond the expiration of that deal.

McKivitz entered the NFL as a fifth-round pick for San Francisco in 2020. After making 14 appearances and three starts as a rookie, he was waived the following year. McKivitz wound up remaining in the organization via the practice squad. Since 2023, he has operated as a full-time starter, primarily serving as **Mike McGlinchey**‘s right tackle replacement.

That setup is set to continue in 2026. McKivitz agreed to an extension this past September, and his compensation for the coming campaign is guaranteed. A portion of the West Virginia product’s 2027 pay is already locked in as well. McKivitz will continue to operate in a tackle tandem with Trent Williams, who is set to play out the final two years of his career in San Francisco. The younger half of that tandem hopes to continue in the Bay Area beyond that point, however.

“I want to be on that 10-year wall,” McKivitz said (via SB Nation’s Nicholas McGee) of his intentions with respect to staying with the 49ers for at least a decade. “I don’t want to leave here. Obviously being cut, I’ve got some scars there. But, there was a reason why I was drafted here, why I was cut here, and why I still play here. Now I’ve had three good seasons of starting and I’m going into the fourth.”

McKivitz has shown steady improvement in terms of PFF evaluation over the course of his three-year run as a starter. He ranked eighth among qualifying tackles in 2025, and expectations will be high for another strong showing this season. McKivitz is entering his age-30 campaign, and his extension runs through 2028. A third San Francisco contract would thus be needed for his 10-year goal to be reached.

An effective season in 2026 would go a long way in helping the 49ers repeat their run to the playoffs. McKivitz managing to remain healthy and consistent would come as little surprise based on how the past three years have played out, and it could pave the way for another long-term commitment being made by San Francisco at some point.
