Manchester United transfer news: The Red Devils target Brentford forward Igor Thiago in £69m battle with Arsenal
Manchester United transfer news: The transfer window is barely open, but Manchester United are already tangled in a proper summer saga. Reports out of South America via RTI Esporte suggest United have spent the last few weeks tracking Brentford striker Igor Thiago. It is not a free run, though.
Arsenal are pushing hard too. Brentford know they hold all the cards here, especially with the 25-year-old Brazilian locked down on a contract until 2031. They want £69 million. No less.
United are desperate for presence up front. Thiago has that. He bagged 22 Premier League goals last term, a return that forced his way into Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad. Old Trafford recruitment staff have been debating a concrete bid since early June, charmed by how quickly the forward adapted to the pace of the English game. He presses. He bullies centre-backs.
Arsenal see him as the missing piece for their own title ambitions, which complicates the maths for United. Bidding wars get messy, fast. United are watching closely, but they cannot afford to get played.
Financial risk meets tactical reward for Michael Carrick
Spending £69 million on a striker who is not a proven, world-class veteran feels risky. Crazy, even. Michael Carrick has a massive headache here. United dropped serious cash on Benjamin Sesko last summer. Sesko is the future. Bringing in Thiago cannot be about replacing the young Slovenian; it has to be about complementing him. Plus, Joshua Zirkzee is heavily tipped for a return to Italy, so a spot is opening up.
But look at the broader squad. The engine room needs a massive overhaul, and Atalanta’s Ederson is still the priority target for central midfield. Left-back is a problem area, too. Money is tight. If United blow the bulk of their remaining budget on Thiago, they are stuck elsewhere.

They have to shift players out before they can even think about an official bid. Carrick needs to think long and hard about whether the Brazilian is a necessity or just an expensive luxury. If the price climbs a penny over that £69 million mark, United must walk away.
