West Ham United to receive £70m bid for Mateus Fernandes

One of Manchester United’s top midfield targets following their failure to sign Elliot Anderson is West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.
The 21-year-old missed out on a spot in Portugal’s 26-man World Cup squad this summer, but has plenty of transfer interest after a fantastic season, where he was nominated for Young Player of the Season in the Premier League.
A good player doesn’t come without fellow suitors, and Manchester United appear behind in the race for Fernandes. Tottenham Hotspur have been closing in on an agreement on personal terms and are now set to put their cards on the table.
According to journalist Nicolo Schira on X, Spurs are ready to offer £70m to West Ham to obtain Mateus Fernandes’ services. Real Madrid and Manchester United remain in the race, but for now, Spurs are the ones in the bidding room.
It’s a huge statement of intent from Spurs, who narrowly missed out on relegation from the Premier League last season. The Lilywhites are also continuing to hone in on Sandro Tonali, who was also a Manchester United transfer target until the Red Devils recently told Newcastle they did not plan on making a move for the Italian.
With an offer also going in for United target Shea Charles from Leeds United, Michael Carrick’s side are behind in completing their next midfield signing.
The coup of Brazilian Ederson from Atalanta is all-but complete, so now the attention has turned to the next midfielder to partner star boy Kobbie Mainoo.
While the noise around United and their transfer efforts is quiet for now, there is no doubt they will be making the steps they think are right in the boardroom before making any offers.
United have been careful with their business in the last couple of years, and will continue a policy of making 100 per cent sure before they buy, as it worked last summer to great effect.
