Chelsea Join Arsenal In Race For French Midfield Dynamo Who Could Be Sold For£43M

Chelsea could challenge Arsenal for the signature of Roma midfielder Manu Kone, according to reports in the Italian media.

Newspaper Corriere della Sera (via AllRoma.it) claim that the two London clubs are vying to snap up the France international.

Despite qualifying for the Champions League after finish 3rd last season, Roma still need to balance the books to comply with a settlement they reached with UEFA after previous breaches of Financial Fair Play rules.

It means they are looking to make a significant capital gain before the end of the accounting year on June 30th. For that reason, the Giallorossi would consider any reasonable offer for Kone.

How much would Chelsea need to pay for the midfielder?

Roma are said to be ready to sanction Kone’s sale if they receive a bid in the region of €50m (£43m).

Considering the price tags of other midfielders on the market, including Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who is said to be a top target for the Blues, Kone’s reported valuation makes him an attractive and affordable option.

Will Arsenal make a bid for Kone?

Trusted source, the Hand of Arsenal, says the Gunners have held talks with the player’s agent, but the Frenchman is just one of several midfielders under consideration.

At this stage, they don’t appear to be an imminent threat to Chelsea if they do want to make their own move for Kone.

It should be emphasised that these reports are coming out of Italy, and there is a chance that the Blues’ name is simply being used to drum up interest as Roma look to raise much-needed funds.

Xabi Alonso’s side are undoubtedly keen on reinforcing the middle of the park, especially as there are serious doubts over the future of Enzo Fernandez, but it doesn’t necessarily mean Kone is a target.
