Manchester United have shifted their focus to the transfer market following a third-place finish in the Premier League. Michael Carrick's squad is set to be strengthened throughout the summer as United gear up for a campaign competing across multiple competitions.

Since replacing Ruben Amorim in January, Carrick has guided United back into the Champions League, placing greater demands on the existing squad. This will inevitably require fresh faces.

Casemiro's exit has left a significant void in midfield that Ederson is expected to partially address, but another signing in that position seems probable. Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali is one name that has reportedly attracted the club's attention.

An offer has now reportedly been turned down for the Italian, though it wasn't United who made it. The Manchester Evening News provides the latest transfer developments from Old Trafford.

Sandro Tonali offer

Newcastle star Tonali looks set for a busy summer and while United are reportedly among those pursuing him, it is Tottenham who have submitted an £80million bid.

This offer has been promptly rejected by Newcastle, according to the Newcastle Chronicle, as they value their player at £100m. The Magpies are, however, apparently willing to sell Tonali.

Manchester City and Arsenal are believed to be keen, alongside United, but it is Spurs who have taken the lead with an initial proposal.

Midfield alternative

Beyond Tonali, West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes is another name being touted for a switch to United. The Portuguese playmaker was one of the few positives in a dismal campaign for the Hammers as they dropped out of the Premier League.

Reports indicate United have expressed interest in the 21-year-old Fernandes but are unwilling to meet West Ham's £80m valuation. Several other clubs are also believed to be pursuing Fernandes.

United legend Gary Neville believes his former club should consider an alternative if the asking price isn't reduced, and he points to Germany international Felix Nmecha.

Nmecha is an ex-Manchester City player and has impressed for Germany at the World Cup. The Dortmund midfielder is said to have a £69m release clause in his contract that becomes active next year.

Speaking on ITV, Neville said: "The more he [Nmecha] plays like he did the other night the more expensive he'll get. But at the moment, we hear Manchester United are being quoted £100m for the West Ham boy Fernandes.

"So they're going to have to be looking around this tournament and parts of Europe. He looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything."
