Back on home soil, preparations for next season’s Premier League are already underway, with the fixture list coming out last week. The race is on for clubs to get their transfer business done in a timely manner, giving their managers ample time to knit gel their squads together in the post-World Cup pre-season period.

Today’s rumours round-up begins in west London, where Chelsea have some serious thinking to do in regards to their striker options. Joao Pedro excelled last season after joining from Brighton, but Liam Delap proved to be a total flop in his debut campaign, while Marc Guiu’s level of performances supported the emerging conspiracy theory suggesting that the Blues owners thought they were actually buying Marc Guehi.

Nicolas Jackson is another forward option that Chelsea need to make their minds up about, after Bayern Munich opted not to sign him on a permanent basis following his underwhelming loan spell last season. Football Insider now claim that the ex-Villarreal striker is ready to fight for his place in the squad, and hopes to impress new manager Xabi Alonso in pre-season.

The report mentions a wealth of interest from potential suitors, including Newcastle United and Serie A duo Juventus and Napoli. Jackson’s contract currently runs all the way through until 2033, which the story notes is likely to mean the Blues will demand a significant fee to sell him. Stories elsewhere have suggested Jackson could be used as a makeweight to sign Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso.

The 3AM Verdict: Jackson had a deeply frustrating first two seasons at Chelsea. Despite scoring 28 league goals, he also missed a wealth of golden opportunities, and frustrated fans with his frequent ill-discipline. At 25-years-old, he’s too senior to hold on to the ‘raw talent’ label, and really needs to start showing he can be a reliable, focal point of the attack if he’s to remain at the club.

Arsenal ‘step up interest’ in Brentford goal-machine

Up in north London, Arsenal will head into next season as reigning Premier League champions, and look set to strengthen their squad over the summer months with an eye to retaining their title. They’re likely to freshen up their striker options, and a report from the Brazilian press, via Sport Witness, claims they’re after Brentford forward Igor Thiago.

The powerhouse striker bulldozed his way to 20 goals in all competitions for the Bees last season, and earned himself a place in Brazil’s World Cup squad. The story claims that Arsenal have made the 24-year-old a “priority target” and suggests that they could be set to battle league rivals Manchester United in the race to sign him.

Further on in the article, it’s claimed that Arteta has had Thiago on his radar for some time, admiring the 6ft 3” attacker since before he joined the Bees from Club Brugge back in 2024. It’s said that it would take a fee close to £80m for Brentford to consider a sale, having lost his predecessor, Ivan Toney, to the Saudi Pro League two seasons ago.

The 3AM Verdict: Arsenal got a bit of reputation for relying on set-pieces for their goals last season, and could certainly do with more depth up-front to challenge Viktor Gyokeres for his starting spot. The Gunners will be busy this summer looking for a left-back and potentially two central midfielders, so finding an extra £80m for a new striker could be tricky.

Man United ‘prepare move’ for World Cup star

Last but not least, let’s finish up at Old Trafford, where Manchester United are in the midst of a serious squad overhaul. They’re completely renovating the heart of their midfield, and are also looking for some options out wide. Caught Offside say they’re now ready to accelerate a move for West Ham star Crysencio Summerville.

In the report, it’s said that the Red Devils are likely to need to replace Marcus Rashford this summer, and could become embroiled in a “fierce battle” with the likes of Roma and Paris Saint-Germain to sign Summerville. The Irons’ rumoured £50m asking price could prove a stumbling block, however, with United also set to spend a significant fee on another of West Ham’s midfield stars in Mateus Fernandes.

The 3AM Verdict: Like many Premier League clubs this summer, United have an awful lot to do, and share the same targets with a number of rivals. Signing both Fernandes and Summerville would be a serious statement of intent, but doing so could prove financially tricky if they still want a big-money striker and a left-back to strengthen the squad.
