Former Sunderland academy player Jordan Hunter has earned a new behind-the-scenes promotion at Liverpool
Former Sunderland academy player Jordan Hunter has earned a new behind-the-scenes role at Liverpool.
The 26-year-old has combined his playing career with coaching and fitness work in recent years, and is currently part of Liverpool’s academy set-up after stints with Gateshead and Chester.
Hunter, who joined Sunderland from Liverpool in 2018 and made one senior appearance for the Black Cats in the EFL Trophy, has announced that he will move into the role of under-18 end-stage rehab lead and sport science assistant at Liverpool for the coming season.
Announcing the news on LinkedIn, Hunter wrote: “I’m pleased to share that I will be moving into the role of U18 End stage rehab lead & Sport science assistant at Liverpool FC for the coming season. After a brilliant 25-26 season with lots of different experiences, I’m looking forward to stepping into the new role and continuing my development.”
Hunter arrived at Sunderland in July 2018 after leaving Liverpool and made his senior debut later that year in the EFL Trophy. He then joined South Shields on loan in August 2019 before leaving Sunderland at the end of the 2019-20 season, having rejected a two-year contract offer.
He returned to South Shields permanently in 2020 and went on to make more than 70 appearances for the Mariners across his spells with the club. Hunter later joined Gateshead in 2023, returned to South Shields on loan, and has since had spells with Chester and Atherton Collieries.
While continuing his playing career, Hunter has also been building experience in the performance and rehabilitation side of the game. His LinkedIn profile says he currently leads the under-18s pitch-based rehab provision at Liverpool and assists the lead performance-based fitness coach.
Hunter also notes that he previously worked in the North East as a part-time strength and conditioning coach in the private sector, focusing on youth athletic development and working with elite young athletes from Sunderland, Newcastle United and Middlesbrough academies. His new Liverpool role marks another step in that off-field pathway, with Hunter now taking on greater responsibility in one of the country’s leading Premier League academy environments.
