Respected manager"wants to sign"Liverpool ace and talks have now"opened"- journalist

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi “wants to sign” Liverpool winger Cody Gakpo this summer, according to a new update from journalist Nicolo Schira.

Gakpo may have had a poor season for the Reds in 2025/26, like so many players in fairness, but he has found his groove at the 2026 World Cup.

The 27-year-old scored twice and assisted once in the Netherlands’ 5-1 win over Sweden on Saturday evening, showing what he is capable of.

While some may want Gakpo to remain at Liverpool as a squad player, Schira has now taken to X to talk up Spurs and De Zerbi’s strong interest in him, with talks even underway:

“Roberto De Zerbi wants to sign Cody Gakpo. Tottenham are working and ready to submit an important bid to Liverpool; while for the Dutch winger offered a contract until 2031 and a key role in RDZ’s project. Opened talks.”

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has backed up that claim on YouTube [via Anfield Sector], saying:

“There is interest from Tottenham in Cody Gakpo. There are clubs trying to understand if there is a way to strike a deal for Gakpo. As of today, Liverpool have not given green light to an exit. They are still happy with him. They will have to make a decision, not during the World Cup, it’s going to take time.”

Should Liverpool allow Cody Gakpo to leave?

Gakpo certainly has his detractors at Liverpool, especially after last season, with some criticising him for being too one-dimensional and not getting the best out of his physical frame.

But the Dutchman is showing at the World Cup what a threat he can be on his day, and that has also been the case in his earlier years at Anfield.

Keeping Gakpo as a squad player would arguably make the most sense for Liverpool, but if Spurs come in with a big bid, it may be hard to say no to.

Replacing him with Paris Saint-Germain ace Bradley Barcola, as has been mooted, would then be an upgrade, with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande hopefully coming in as another wide option.

Essentially, there are positives and negatives to Liverpool retaining Gakpo’s services, and losing him wouldn’t be the end of the world.
