Liverpool have flatly refused the latest proposal from Inter Milan regarding Curtis Jones, with the club left irritated by lowball offers of up to £21.7 million.

Jones is a priority target for Inter this summer, but the Serie A club are attempting to prise the midfielder from his boyhood club on the cheap.

After an initial bid of €20 million (£17.3m) was turned down earlier this month, they returned with a new proposal this week – as widely reported by the Merseyside press.

The Times‘ Paul Joyce reports that their informal offer was worth €25 million (£21.7m) and was immediately rejected by Liverpool’s decision-makers.

Jones is valued at £35 million and sporting director Richard Hughes is “unimpressed” by Inter’s advances, with talks now halted.

Liverpool no longer view Inter as “serious contenders for his signature, given the low-ball nature of their informal bids.”

With a year left on his contract it is clearly not an ideal situation to allow Jones to head into the new campaign with his future unresolved.

But the Telegraph‘s Dominic King writes that Liverpool have “no concerns” over the Scouser becoming “distracted” if he remains at Anfield as is currently expected.

King claims that Jones could still resume talks over a new contract, though “that is something for later in the year.”

As it stands, he will be part of Andoni Iraola‘s squad for the start of pre-season and the tour of the United States, and could receive an increase in game time under the new head coach.

However, the reports around Jones’ future suggest that Liverpool are still open to selling the 25-year-old provided their £35 million price tag is met.

There is a clear frustration at Inter’s methods but the door does not appear shut to the Italian side returning to the table with a significantly improved offer.

Jones is one of 10 Liverpool players who will enter the final year of their contracts this summer, including Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.

Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Kostas Tsimikas and Freddie Woodman also have 12 months left, along with fringe players Stefan Bajcetic, Calvin Ramsay and Harvey Davies.

It means a number of big decisions will need to be made in the coming weeks over extensions and sales, with it far from ideal to see so many players leave on free transfers.
