REPORT: West Ham Have Made 'Initial' Approach For Mateus Fernandes's 'Replacement'

West Ham are one of two clubs who have made “initial enquiries” for Hibernian midfielder Josh Mulligan, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Hammers and Wolves have formally registered their interest in the Scotland Under-21 international.

Southampton are also said to be keen on recruiting Mulligan, making it a trio of Championship clubs pursuing his signature.

Hibs are not expected to make things easy for potential suitors, though. The Scottish Premiership side are not desperate to sell him, and they feel they have a strong negotiating position with his contract expiring in 2029.

Even so, it appears that Mulligan may well be the subject of bids during the summer transfer window.

What do West Ham fans need to know about the player?

Mulligan started his career at Dundee. During his time at Dens Park, he was loaned out to Cove Rangers and Peterhead (on two occasions).

The midfielder established himself as a regular starter midway through the 24/25 season, and it was enough to attract the attention of Hibs, who signed him on a free transfer when his contract expired last July.

Mulligan made 33 appearances for the Edinburgh club last campaign, scoring 3 goals and providing 5 assists. He is usually deployed as a no.6, but he can also be used as an inverted fullback or wingback if required.

Why is Mulligan being targeted?

TEAMtalk suggest that the Scot is being eyed as a potential “replacement” for Mateus Fernandes. While owner Daniel Kretinsky has insisted that the Irons don’t need to sell players, the Portuguese international would be offloaded if his £80m asking price is met.

Manchester United are said to be pushing hard to sign the midfielder (as well as his teammate Crysencio Summerville), but Tottenham, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain could also enter the battle for his services.
