'Quality technician' to 'infectious personality' - Everton coach makes feelings clear on…

Keith Southern has named his Blackpool Mount Rushmore from the players he featured alongside at Bloomfield Road.

Blackpool legend Keith Southern played with his fair share of notable players throughout his time in Tangerine.

The retired midfielder, who is now a coach with Everton, spent a decade at Bloomfield Road between 2002 and 2012, making 370 appearances in total for the Seasiders.

During that time, the 45-year-old enjoyed two play-off successes, winning promotion from both League One and the Championship, and being part of a historic season in the Premier League.

Looking back on Southern’s stint with Blackpool, we asked him to name his Mount Rushmore comprised of his former teammates.

Here’s who he picked:

“I think Charlie would have to be there. He was the best player I played with during my time at Blackpool.

“We had a really nice blend in midfield of him with the goals and the assists, but he’ll acknowledge what myself and Vaughany (David Vaughan) did to help him along his journey.

“I’ll say little Vaughany as well because he was a real quality technician. Such a quiet and shy character, but just a brilliant little footballer.

“After his year in the Premier League with us, he went on to play for Sunderland and for Wales. He was a really talented player.”

“Probably Evo because of the fact he was on the team sheet with me more than any other player.

“We had seven years together. We started at the bottom of League One when he came on loan from QPR, and had the high of getting promoted, staying in the Championship, and getting promoted again.

“We had some amazing times, and Evo was one of the few who went from League One into the Premier League.”

“The fourth one has got to be Brett (Ormerod). His personality is infectious. His character helped everyone along.

“He had a couple of spells at Blackpool. He scored the winning goal at Wembley, and scored in all four divisions. I’m not sure you get a bigger legend than him.

Honourable mentions

“There’s honourable mentions for so many. That League One team that got promoted against Yeovil was jam packed full of really good players - Mike Jackson, Shaun Barker, David Fox, Andy Morrell, Keigan Parker.

“Gary Taylor-Fletcher was a top player, Stephen Crainey was a top player.

“There’s too many. There’s Wes Hoolahan - what a player he was. He was probably the best player in the Championship at that time. He was incredible that season. No one could get near him, was a little superstar, and Norwich paid the £250,000 to get him out of his contract.”
