Tottenham in talks to hijack Man United's deal for highly-rated Premier League midfielder

Tottenham are looking to raid West Ham for a second season running with the club keen to sign Mateus Fernandes, talkSPORT understands.

The 21-year-old looks set to depart the London Stadium following the Hammers' relegation into the Championship.

Fernandes only made the move to east London last year from Southampton in an initial deal worth £38million plus £3m in add-ons.

The one-cap Portugal international, who failed to make Roberto Martinez's World Cup squad, chipped in with three goals and four assists from 36 Premier League outings.

Despite suffering back-to-back relegations, interest is high in the youngster, with talkSPORT revealing how Manchester United have made him a priority signing.

It is believed that £80m-rated Fernandes is open to a move to the Red Devils after Michael Carrick brought Champions League football back to Old Trafford.

He has even been tipped to join United in a potential £130m double deal with teammate Crysencio Summerville.

But United's move for the midfielder is in danger of being hijacked by Spurs, who have already made an enquiry to West Ham over securing his services.

And now the north London outfit, who finished in 17th spot for a second successive season, have stepped up their pursuit of the Sporting Lisbon academy graduate.

Giving the latest news regarding the player, talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook said: "Lots of interest in Mateus Fernandes.

"We know that Manchester United have basically got personal terms already agreed.

"Tottenham are now showing interest in Fernandes as well, they've been busy in the market so far.

Fernandes came second in West Ham's Hammer of the Year award

"They've signed Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on free transfers.

"They've got in Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton in a deal worth £52m.

"They want Sandro Tonali of Newcastle and now Fernandes as well.

"This is Roberto De Zerbi really wielding his power, when he took the job on a very lucrative contract, he was promised much more control than previous Tottenham managers in terms of recruitment.

"And Fernandes is another player that De Zerbi has identified as someone who can improve Tottenham, having obviously flirted with relegation right up until the final day of the Premier League season."

Should Fernandes join Tottenham, he would become the sixth player to directly join Spurs from West Ham in the last 24 years.
