The 2025/26 campaign was one Cody Gakpo would rather forget.

After an exceptional title-winning season in 2024/25, the Dutch forward endured a serious dip in form.

With just 7 league goals and 5 assists across 36 appearances, Gakpo struggled to recapture his best in a poor season for the entire squad.

But if Liverpool’s season left Gakpo searching for answers, the World Cup has been his stage for redemption.

Representing the Netherlands in North America, the forward has looked a completely different player.

He scored twice in the 5-1 demolition of Sweden, an imperious Dutch display that sent them to the top of Group F. His brace took him to five World Cup group-stage goals for the Netherlands.

“It’s a little bit different,” Gakpo said when quizzed on why he is performing better for his nation.

“How I play here, where the coach wants me to be, the freedom that I have than at the club,” he said. “That’s it basically”.

Tentative reports from the Netherlands asserted that Tottenham Hotspur wanted the Liverpool striker. Now it’s been confirmed by Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on a live on his YouTube channel, Romano has confirmed reports that Tottenham are keen on Cody Gakpo – but that Liverpool are yet to open doors for an exit:

“There is interest from Tottenham, there are clubs trying to understand if there is a way to strike a deal for Cody Gakpo this summer but as yet Liverpool are yet to give a green light to the exit, they are still very happy with Cody Gakpo.”

“This is going to be a moment where Liverpool have to make a decision, I don’t think it’s going to be during the World Cup, I don’t think Gakpo is going to Tottenham today or tomorrow, but for sure there is interest.”

With Liverpool holding Gakpo’s contract until 2030, any buying club would have to stump up a sizeable fee.
