George Pickens skipped the Cowboys’ voluntary offseason workouts at his agent’s direction. Because the team ruled out a long-term extension before the July 15 deadline, Pickens will play the 2026 season on a $27.3 million franchise tag, which he signed on April 29.
While external speculation grew over his OTA absence, the noise settled the moment mandatory minicamp arrived. Pickens reported on day one, seamlessly participating in individual drills and catching passes from Dak Prescott, who shared great feelings about practice.

The Pickens situation is stable for now, but it mirrors how the Cowboys handled Micah Parsons before trading him to the Green Bay Packers. If relations sour again, a rumored trade proposal suggests Dallas could send Pickens to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cowboys’ worst-case scenario: George Pickens in a Chiefs uniform
That doesn’t mean there isn’t a doomsday version of how the 2026 season plays out. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton included a Cowboys-to-Chiefs Pickens trade in his early trade deadline bold predictions, and while it reads as extreme right now, the conditions that would trigger it aren’t impossible.
He wrote, “Dallas’ hesitation to negotiate a long-term deal with Pickens opens up the possibility for a trade midway through the upcoming campaign. If Flournoy blossoms in a complementary role, the Cowboys could trade Pickens to a receiver-needy contending team like the Kansas City Chiefs, who don’t have a reliable lead perimeter playmaker.”
Dallas used the franchise tag to see if Pickens can repeat his impressive 2025 stats, 93 receptions, 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns, before giving him a massive extension alongside CeeDee Lamb. As Stephen Jones noted, paying two receivers a big paycheck is incredibly difficult.
If the 2026 season collapses — particularly if Christian Parker’s new defense struggles — the Cowboys will face a choice. They might trade Pickens before the November deadline rather than let him leave for nothing in free agency.
The Chiefs are the most logical destination. Putting Pickens in Patrick Mahomes‘ offense midseason would immediately boost Kansas City’s championship odds. For Dallas fans, it is a nightmare scenario: a star they refused to pay helping a rival win another Super Bowl.
The tag was the safe play. Whether it stays safe depends entirely on what this Cowboys roster does when the regular season kicks off.
