Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea tenure is already facing an early setback. The Blues’ new head coach must now plan without a key defender for his first football matches in charge. As per the latest news from Chelsea, Wesley Fofana will miss the first two games of the 2026/27 Premier League season due to suspension.
Wesley Fofana: The Red Card and Two-Game Ban
Wesley Fofana was sent off on the final day of the 2025/26 season. Chelsea lost 2-1 away at Sunderland, and the French centre-back picked up two yellow cards to earn his marching orders. It was his second red card in a single Premier League season, and that distinction matters.
As reported by football.london, the second dismissal triggers a two-match ban under Premier League rules regarding second red cards in a single season. So Alonso will be without him for the trip to Fulham on August 24 and the home game against Brighton on August 29. Both are important fixtures to start a new era, and losing a senior centre-back for both is far from ideal.
The sending off was not without debate, either. As reported by Football Insider, former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett said Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor was pulling just as much as his opponent in the challenge that led to the second yellow. The incident has since sparked fresh calls for VAR to be extended to cover second yellow card decisions in the future.
A Difficult Season for Wesley Fofana
This was not a one-off. As reported by Yahoo Sports, Wesley Fofana was also sent off against Burnley back in February, again for two yellow cards. That ban cost him the very next game, a London derby against Arsenal. It was a damaging moment in what turned out to be a damaging season.
Two red cards in one Premier League season is a serious problem for any defender. The Blues ended the campaign without European football for the first time in three years. Their disciplinary record played a big part in that decline, with the Sunderland dismissal being the club’s eighth red card of the season, as reported by Yahoo Sports.
Wesley Fofana for Chelsea in 2025/26, as per FOTMOB:
Competitions Matches Aerial Duels Won Defensive Contributions Interceptions
Premier League 25 69 207 40
FA Cup 4 9 31 2
EFL Cup 3 8 26 3
UCL 6 5 30 11
The bigger picture around the defender is complicated, too. He joined from Leicester City for a potential £75 million back in 2022. Since then, injuries, inconsistency, and now back-to-back suspensions have defined his time in west London. He reportedly wants to remain at the club. However, the supporters have largely run out of patience with him.
Chelsea’s Centre-Back Search Goes On
Wesley Fofana’s ban means the Blues need another backup centre-back this summer. As reported byfootball.london, signing a long-term partner for Levi Colwill is a top priority heading into the window. Maxence Lacroix of Crystal Palace is on the club’s radar, though he has three years left on his deal at Selhurst Park, and will cost a significant fee.
That search has not been straightforward, either. The Blues tried to sign Dean Huijsen last summer, but he chose Real Madrid. They went back in January for Jeremy Jacquet, and the young Frenchman opted for Liverpool instead. Finding the right defender has proved more difficult than anticipated.
Chelsea insiders are staying quiet on specific transfer targets for now. But Alonso will be keen to bring in a new signing. Wesley Fofana’s two-game ban means the Spaniard begins his tenure at Stamford Bridge with a real defensive headache, and a trip to reigning Premier League champions Arsenal is already waiting on matchday three.
