Manchester United’s long-term future is set to be shaped by one of the biggest projects in football history.
The club’s plans for a new home have continued moving forward as discussions around the future of Old Trafford enter a crucial stage.
The project has been described as a generational opportunity that could reshape the local community while preserving the identity of the club.
Now, another major milestone has been reached in the push to deliver a new era for Manchester United.
Manchester United secure majority of land to construct new stadium
Manchester United have confirmed, via their website, that they have secured the majority of the land needed to construct a proposed 100,000-seater stadium, taking a significant step towards replacing Old Trafford with a new world-class home.
The club has completed the acquisition of a 25-acre site located around 350 metres north-west of the current stadium, purchasing the land from Indurent, an industrial property provider owned by Blackstone.
The move strengthens United’s position as they continue working on the ambitious redevelopment of the Old Trafford area.
The stadium plans form part of a wider 370-acre regeneration project involving Manchester United, Trafford Council, and the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation.
The broader development is expected to create around 15,000 new homes, including affordable housing options, while generating thousands of jobs locally and nationally.
The project is also projected to contribute more than £7 billion annually to the UK economy, highlighting the scale of the transformation beyond football.
Collette Roche, CEO of Manchester United’s New Stadium Development, explained why securing the land represents such an important moment for the club’s future plans.
She said, “Today’s news highlights the progress we’re making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development.”
“Being able to build so close to Old Trafford allows us to preserve the heritage, traditions and rituals that are so important to our fans.
“We are committed to building a world-class stadium with our supporters, not just for them, with atmosphere, affordability and accessibility at the heart of our thinking.”
“This is a generational opportunity that is fully aligned with both local and national growth ambitions.
“Securing the right land for our new home has been absolutely critical, and the land we’ve acquired gives us the stage to deliver a truly world-class stadium that honours our past and is ready for our future.”
Despite the progress, it was previously reported that uncertainty surrounded elements of the project, particularly around potential changes in local leadership.
Reports suggested concerns emerged ahead of the Makerfield by-election involving Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, with figures linked to the development monitoring the outcome.
However, Manchester United have previously confirmed that the proposed stadium will be privately financed, with the club continuing discussions with potential investors.
“Our proposed new stadium will be financed privately, and we continue to have positive conversations with potential investors and all stakeholders.”
For United supporters, the project represents more than just a new stadium, with the club aiming to create a modern landmark.
