“Liverpool Made A Call”–Romano Reveals Surprise Interest In£85M Rated Midfielder Who 2 Other PL Clubs Want

Liverpool have made an enquiry for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes over the last couple of weeks, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Speaking on the Born ‘N Red YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that the Portuguese international is one of the midfielders the Merseyside club are looking at:

“I will tell you something that was not so public in the recent days and weeks. Liverpool made a call two weeks ago to understand the situation of Fernandes at West Ham, to understand the price and conditions, but they didn’t return with any bid or any official conversation.”

“But they made a call two weeks ago, I can guarantee that. Tottenham and Man United are busy with a deal, so there are so many clubs involved. The player is going to be expensive, more than £85m. It means Liverpool are working on midfielders.

Could Liverpool hijack another deal?

As Romano mentions, Manchester United and Tottenham have been working hard to try and secure the signature of the midfielder, with the former said to have agreed personal terms.

Andoni Iraola’s side have already hijacked Newcastle’s move for Victor Munoz this summer, so you can’t completely rule them out doing the same for Fernandes.

However, West Ham’s asking price seems pretty excessive, and the Reds might decide to devote more resources to signing a winger such as Yan Diomande or Bradley Barcola instead.

Fernandes is not the only midfielder on the club’s radar

It does appear as if sporting director Richard Hughes will look to reinforce the middle of the park. That is prudent, considering that there is uncertainty over the futures of Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister.

A couple of midfield targets have been mentioned in recent days. Brighton’s Yasin Ayari and Juventus’s Khephren Thuram are thought to be of interest.

Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton was seen as another potential option, but the departure of Arne Slot may have moved him down the shortlist, with Iraola looking for a different profile.
