Despite heavy links to Liverpool, doubts have been raised over whether the Reds will make a move to sign Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton this summer.

Andoni Iraola has replaced Arne Slot as head coach of Liverpool and work is already well underway to sign his replacement, with Osasuna forward Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet of Rennes signed as the club’s first additions this summer.

There are also intense talks with RB Leipzig over a deal to sign Yan Diomande, although that deal is proving difficult to complete given the money involved. It’s reported that a final price for the 19-year-old will be somewhere in the range of £104m and £112m.

Meanwhile, despite talks with Inter Milan, it’s now looking likely that Curtis Jones will not leave Anfield this summer, with Liverpool offended by the Serie A outfit’s repeated lowball offers, making it unlikely he will move to Italy.

Now, it appears as though, with Jones set to stay, and concerns over the price tag placed on Wharton’s head, Liverpool are abandoning plans to pursue Wharton this summer.

Liverpool unlikely to sign Adam Wharton amid Crystal Palace’s £80m+ price tag

According to transfer specialist Ben Jacobs, Liverpool are unlikely to pursue a deal to sign Wharton despite being heavily linked with the 22-year-old in the last few months.

“There is some appreciation there. But it’s not moving, I’m told, as it stands,” he told talkSPORT on Sunday.

“It would be a surprise at this stage if Liverpool enter the race for Adam Wharton.

“You can never say never in a window where Liverpool are going to be looking for a midfielder, but at this stage, nothing is moving between Liverpool and Adam Wharton.”

It’s a pity Liverpool are no longer pursuing Wharton

While it’s understandable that Liverpool do not want to spend so much on Wharton, it’s a pity.

He is easily one of the best passers in the Premier League, but with so much work to be done this summer, it’s unsurprising that Liverpool might not have £80m in the budget to sign him.

If not Wharton, then who, though? Liverpool have also been linked with West Ham star Mateus Fernandes, but the 21-year-old is also priced in the region of £80m.
