Arsenal have been urged to make an ambitious move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with former Tottenham and England midfielder Jermaine Jenas claiming the Italian would be an upgrade on Martin Zubimendi in Mikel Arteta’s midfield.
Tonali has emerged as one of the most talked-about names of the summer transfer window amid growing speculation over his future at Newcastle. Arsenal are among the clubs reportedly monitoring the midfielder, while Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have also been credited with an interest.
Newcastle are believed to value the Italy international at close to £90 million, with reports suggesting they would only consider offers significantly above the fee they paid to sign him from AC Milan in 2023.
Speaking about Arsenal ’s midfield options, Jenas questioned whether Zubimendi has fully convinced since arriving in north London and suggested Tonali would take the Gunners to another level
‘I think Sandro Tonali is one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, in my opinion,’ Jenas told 10bet. ‘He had his misdemeanour, came back, and I thought his attitude from that exact point onward has been brilliant.
‘He’s a dictator of a game; he sets the pace and sets the tone every time he plays. He did the same when he was at AC Milan.
‘When I look at that Arsenal midfield, I was never fully convinced by Martin Zubimendi, if I’m honest with you. I think he’s a decent, solid player, but Tonali would definitely be a level up in that midfield alongside Declan Rice.
‘Though I am a bit surprised that Arsenal’s focus isn’t more forward-thinking than that. I don’t think their midfield is terrible – you’ve got young Myles Lewis-Skelly who has the ability to step in there as well.
‘So Tonali is a great player, and it would be a good move, but I don’t think it’s exactly what they desperately need. I still think they need a proper, out-and-out striker and a specialist on that left wing.’
Tonali enjoyed an impressive 2025-26 campaign, re-establishing himself as a key figure at St James’ Park and attracting widespread praise for his performances in both domestic and international competition. His ability to control matches from deep areas has led some pundits to regard him as one of the best defensive midfielders currently available on the market.
Whether Arsenal pursue a formal approach remains to be seen, but Jenas’ endorsement is certain to intensify debate among supporters as the club weighs up its next move in what promises to be another busy summer transfer window.
