Alonso convinces Chelsea to delay decision on player – Blues man can’t afford to make ‘wrong choice’

Chelsea signed Mamadou Sarr from RC Strasbourg in June 2025 for the Club World Cup and sent him back on loan in August.

The centre-back was a regular under Liam Rosenior at the Ligue 1 side and had played 18 matches.

In the winter market, Chelsea cut short his loan stay at the Ligue 1 side by exercising the recall option. It took place weeks after Rosenior replaced Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge.

There were expectations for Rosenior to utilise the 20-year-old regularly at Chelsea, but that didn’t happen. He only played 264 minutes from six matches for the Premier League side this season.

In March, the France-born Senegal international said he doesn’t regret returning to the west London club soon.

Chelsea future uncertain

Mamadou Sarr’s future needs sorting and Xabi Alonso will have a major say on whether he will play at Chelsea next season.

That’s according to Jeunes Footeux, who covers when the English club will make the final decision.

He has gone through a difficult situation at Chelsea and that hasn’t gone unnoticed. There are several clubs looking at the defender, including RB Leipzig.

In fact, the Bundesliga side have already registered their interest, likely with the Blues.

Alonso hasn’t sanctioned a move yet because he wants to see the youngster during the pre-season. Therefore, Chelsea have delayed their final decision.

If Sarr has to move elsewhere, the Blues then have to decide whether to sanction a loan move [with or without a purchase option] or a permanent transfer.

Whatever the final decision is, Jeunes Footeux warns the player he ‘can’t afford to make the wrong choice’. This could not only impact his playing time next season but also his development. For now, Leipzig and his other suitors have to wait until the pre-season.

Contract, value and agent info

Mamadou Sarr signed a long-term contract until 2023 and is now valued at €22m by Transfermarkt.

French agency Classico, headed by Jonathan Maarek, represent the Chelsea player.
