Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who began his role as global head of soccer at Red Bull at the start of 2025, has been heavily involved across the Red Bull football network, with recent attention focused on the struggling Leipzig side.

RB Leipzig sacked38-year-old head coach Ole Werner after just one season at the club, a decision confirmed last Wednesday.

The move was reportedly made by the club’s leadership group, including Oliver Mintzlaff, Klopp and Mario Gomez, alongside sporting director Marcel Schafer.

Despite securing Champions League qualification, the club opted for a change in direction, also dismissing assistant coaches Patrick Kohlmann and Tom Cichon as part of a wider reshuffle aimed at strengthening their long-term identity under Klopp’s oversight.

The club have now officially appointed Martín Demichelis as their new head coach on a contract running until June 2028. The Argentine arrives after his most recent role at RCD Mallorca, as Leipzig prepare for a new era under their revamped sporting structure.

Demichelis said: “I was won over by my discussions with the club and its sporting vision. RB Leipzig are an ambitious club with a clear identity, outstanding talent and a determination to keep improving at the highest level.

“That is exactly the kind of challenge I was looking for. I have enormous respect for the work that has been done here. I want to build on those foundations and take the next steps together with the team.

“I want to create a side that plays bold, intense and exciting football, takes responsibility on the pitch and inspires the people of Leipzig with its passion.

“I’m also really looking forward to leading RB Leipzig in the Champions League. Testing ourselves against Europe’s best is an incredible challenge and exactly where a club with RB Leipzig’s ambition and quality belongs. I can’t wait to share those special nights with the team.”

Schafer added: “Martín Demichelis brings experience of working at the highest level as both a player and manager in Europe, South America and North America.

“That international perspective is an excellent fit for RB Leipzig and our global outlook. Martín combines a clear footballing philosophy with intensity and outstanding expertise.

“We are convinced that he will bring fresh impetus to the team and play a key role in the club’s continued success and development.”

Martin Demichelis began his coaching career as an assistant at Malaga and also worked within severalBayern München youth setups.

He returned to Argentina for the 2022/23 season, taking charge of River Plate in his first senior managerial role. In his debut campaign, he guided the Buenos Aires side to the Argentine league title along with two domestic cup victories.

After two seasons and 87 competitive matches, Demichelis moved to Mexico to lead CF Monterrey, where he spent the 2024/25 campaign. He took charge of 43 games and steered the five-time champions to the Mexican championship final.

His most recent European stint came with RCD Mallorca, where he impressed with a notable win over Real Madrid and an eight-game unbeaten run after arriving during a relegation battle.

However, despite five wins, Mallorca were relegated on head-to-head record after finishing level on points with two other sides.
