Detroit Lions Host Cornell Powell for Workout

The Detroit Lions continue to explore potential depth options ahead of training camp, and one intriguing name has emerged on their radar.

According to reports, the Lions recently hosted wide receiver Cornell Powell for a workout. The former fifth round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs has spent the last two seasons with the DC Defenders of the UFL, where he developed into one of the league’s more productive pass catchers.

Powell, 28, put together an impressive 2026 campaign, hauling in 34 receptions for 491 yards and a touchdown in just nine regular season games. He followed that up with five catches for 68 yards during the Defenders’ postseason run. The year before, Powell recorded 29 receptions for 418 yards and seven touchdowns, showcasing his ability to make plays down the field.

A product of Clemson, Powell was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft after helping the Tigers capture multiple ACC championships during his college career. While he has yet to establish himself at the NFL level, his recent production in the UFL appears to have earned him another opportunity to impress professional scouts.

The Lions enter training camp with a strong top group of receivers led by Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Isaac TeSlaa. However, competition for the final roster spots remains wide open, making veteran workouts a common part of Detroit’s offseason evaluation process.

Whether Powell ultimately earns a contract remains to be seen, but his recent success in the UFL makes him a name worth monitoring as the Lions continue to fine tune their roster before camp opens.
