Liverpool supporters will be monitoring the ongoing World Cup closely. A number of Reds stars, both current and former, are participating in the tournament being held across the USA, Mexico and Canada.

Sunday witnessed Mohamed Salah make history for Egypt as he found the net in his nation's maiden World Cup victory over New Zealand. The mere sight of the forward celebrating proved a difficult moment for Liverpool supporters to digest, following his departure from the club this summer after nine trophy-filled years.

Today's developments include a swipe directed at the Reds following Salah's exploits. Meanwhile, a Liverpool player not participating in the World Cup has been the subject of another offer from one of Europe's leading clubs.

Mohamed Salah dig

Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan appeared unable to resist a swipe at the alleged mismanagement of Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah after the forward illuminated World Cup 2026 on Sunday.

The 34-year-old demonstrated he retains elite-level quality, playing a pivotal role in Egypt's 3-1 comeback victory over the All Whites. The Liverpool legend's strike leaves him just one goal short of matching Hassan's record as his country's all-time top scorer with 69 goals.

The forward found himself embroiled in a bitter dispute with former Reds head coach Arne Slot throughout the Dutchman's final season at the helm at Anfield. The fallout even prompted two very public outbursts from Salah as he struggled to replicate the impressive figures he had posted the previous campaign, when he guided Liverpool to the Premier League title.

Hassan said: "Salah worked hard on the pitch and this is something you should know. I am maybe the first coach to let him play in a position that matches his danger, that matches his capabilities and qualities. We worked on so many things and I am sure we are going to see more from him."

Tearing up, he added: "I am very happy with this victory, and I thank the entire Egyptian people for their support. This victory is dedicated to all Egyptians, both men and women. I am extremely happy, and my feelings are similar to those of millions of Egyptians after this win."

Bid rejected

Liverpool have turned down a second offer from Inter for Curtis Jones, with a £21.7m bid falling considerably short of their asking price for the midfielder. The Reds have been in negotiations with the Serie A champions for several weeks after initially rebuffing their approach in January.

However, Inter's proposals for Jones remain a considerable distance from Liverpool's valuation, and the club are understood to have grown frustrated with the San Siro side's underwhelming bids for the player. Liverpool are reportedly seeking around £35million for the midfielder, using Conor Gallagher's £35m January transfer from Atletico Madrid to Tottenham Hotspur as a yardstick for their valuation.

Jones has made 228 appearances for the club he supported as a boy since making his debut in January 2019, and has earned four England caps. He had previously indicated he was looking forward to the upcoming season at Anfield, yet uncertainty remains over whether he will still be a Liverpool player by the time the summer transfer window closes.
